Police have launched an investigation after a man died falling into the River Mersey from a boat this evening.
A large scale rescue operation was launched from the Pier Head in Liverpool city centre after the man entered the water near Tranmere Oil Terminal at around 6.40pm.
Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service pulled the man from the water using the service's rescue boat, Marine Fire One.
The victim is believed to have fallen into the water from a tug-boat.
A spokesman from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that Merseyside Police is currently investigating the unexplained death of a man rescued from the River Mersey this evening.
Emergency services were called to Liverpool Pier Head at around 6.40pm following reports from the coastguard that a man had fallen overboard from a boat in the River Mersey, believed to have been close to Tranmere Oil Terminal in Wirral.
"The man was rescued from the water at the Pier Head and taken to hospital by ambulance. Sadly, he was declared deceased short time later.
"At this point there has been no formal identification of the man.
"A post mortem will be carried out to establish a cause of death, which is currently being treated as unexplained. Witness and CCTV enquiries are ongoing.

Ethan Walford, 19, a journalism student from Northern Ireland, told the ECHO: "I was travelling on the day ferry from Belfast to Birkenhead.
"I have been on it a couple of times now, and about 6.15pm I noticed we weren't where we should be.
"That's about the time it came over the tannoy that a man had fallen overboard from a tug-boat.
Mr Walford said the ferry was delayed by around 40 minutes.
A fire service spokesman said: "Two fire engines, the search and rescue appliance and the service's rescue boat, marine fire one, were in attendance.
"North West Ambulance Service and the Port Police were also in attendance.
"One person was rescued from the water by marine fire one and taken back to land. They were then taken to hospital."
