At the Noordzee terminal in the Antwerp port area, thirty containers of an inland vessel have fallen into the water at the Zandvliet lock this afternoon. That says the Fire Department Zone Antwerp. It is not yet clear what is in the containers or how the incident could happen.
"We received a report at 13.45. Thirty containers have fallen from an inland vessel. How that came about is not clear, "says Annelies Nauwelaerts, spokeswoman for the Antwerp Port Authority.

"The situation is under control. In fact, it is now the case that all services such as the fire brigade are on site. Containers are towed out of the navigation channel. There is currently a temporary prohibition and disablement on the Scheldt, presumably for one and a half to two hours, so that the tugboats can do their work. The nuisance is currently very limited due to the quiet shipping traffic. "
