Man killed, 3 others injured at Port of Longview after line tied to ship snaps

With great regret, we've been made to understand that a longshore worker and member of ILWU Local Union 21 suffered a fatal accident yesterday at the port of Longview, Washington.

Byron "Jake" Jacobs, a dedicated family man with a wife and three children under the age of ten was, according to reports, involved in line handling operations associated with a log export vessel.

The unconfirmed reports received thus far, indicate that there was a "snapback" situation created by one of the tensioned mooring lines. Mr. Jacobs was, from those same reports, struck and killed by the parted line.

In the fullness of time, we hope to learn more about the particulars of this accident. Those members with credible information are encouraged to report it here. In the meantime, we mourn with the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Jacobs.

UPDATE: 28 June 11:15 AM

We now understand that the vessel at issue is M/V ANSAC SPLENDOR (see photo below). Line handling orders were apparently issued by the Port of Longview.

UPDATE: 28 June 5:00 PM

We have been told by normally reliable sources that the accident outlined above occurred during the shifting of the vessel from one berth to another, and that only one mooring line had been deployed in that process, taking the entire strain of the vessel's load imposition when it parted.

We also have been made to understand that a crew member was also seriously injured in this accident, and is not expected to live.

News reports now coming our way indicate that a security guard and another longshore worker were hurt, with non-life threatening injuries.
