One of the latest deployments by a marine construction plant hire specialist with a base in Ipswich involves one of its shortest-ever journeys.

Red7Marine (R7M), which has its main operational yard at the Port of Ipswich, has supplied a jack-up barge to support geoscience services company Fugro in carrying out site investigation works for the new Upper Orwell Crossings.
The barge, Haven Seajack 4, is one of 12 operated by R7M which currently has its head office at Wrabness, near Manningtree, but is due to relocate to a larger unit at Fox’s Marina, at Wherstead, on the edge of Ipswich.
Originally known at the Ipswich Wet Dock Crossing, the Upper Orwell Crossings project now involves three bridges – a crossing from the east bank of the River Orwell to the southern end of the Wet Dock island and another from the island across New Cut to the west bank , both for all road users, plus an improved crossing, for cyclists and pedestrians only, over the Prince Philip Lock.
R7M supplies equipment for projects across the country, with another of its barges currently working on the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station project in Somerset.
However, it also currently has a second deployment closer to home with the barge Haven SeaConstructor supporting construction group Volker in the latest development at Port of Felixstowe.
Work to extend Berth 8 and Berth 9 at the port – to a combined length of 920 metres, enough to accommodate the world’s largest container vessels – was completed in 2015. 
The latest project involves the creation of a new container yard behind Berth 9, including the reclamation of around 3.2 hectares of seabed behind the existing finger pier.
Red7Marine saw turnover climb from £7m in 2016 to £16m last year and is targeting further growth during 2018. Its performance represents a turnaround compared with 2015 when it had to be rescued from administration after an associated business was badly affected by the cancellation of projects following a collapse in the price of crude oil.
Founder and managing director Nick Offord, who led the purchase of the business from the administrators, says the larger premises at Fox’s Marina are now needed to accommodate its expanding team.
