Kotug Smit Towage has started operations in one of the UK’s largest ports, mobilising four powerful tugs to Southampton on the south coast of England. These have bollard pulls ranging from 60 tonnes to 95 tonnes.
The selected tugs were chosen for their outstanding capabilities, manoeuvrability and performance. Each tug will have a dedicated crew that has been trained to operate in the waters around Southampton.
The first towage operation involved tugs ZP Boxer and SD Salvor towing container vessel MOL Brilliance to the DP World container terminal in Southampton.
The investment by KotugSmit was made after the vessel operator studied the market requirements in Southampton. It concluded that commencing operations in the port would be another stepping stone towards further expansion within the UK.
It already provides tailored towage services in London and Liverpool. KotugSmit plans to further strengthen its service portfolio in the UK.
KotugSmit said: “The start-up of this new operation in Southampton expresses our commitment and adaptability to follow our customers’ business and encourages further growth and development in the Port of Southampton in co-operation with the local authorities and all stakeholders.”
