ANL drops Patrick at Botany

Problems with the introduction of automation at Patrick’s Port Botany operation have prompted shipping line ANL to drop the company as its stevedore for its Tranztas (Australia-New Zealand) service.
ANL gave notice of the change in a statement which said the decision “follows short-term impacts to ANL’s strict weekly schedule as a result of the recent finalisation of Patrick’s Port Botany redevelopment project”.
Patrick’s Port Botany container terminal was closed from March 29 to April 2 for the final commissioning of its redevelopment and automation project.
Patrick had been positive about the switchover, and had subcontracted vessels during the shutdown to terminals operated DP World Australia or Hutchison Ports Australia, while changes were made such as the commissioning of Kalmar Autostrads. The unmanned straddles service the quayside ship-to-shore gantries and the landside road exchanges.
However the changeover was followed by periods of bad weather which reportedly triggered safety systems in the new automated operation.
ANL has recently launched its TranzTas service as a premium offering between Australia and New Zealand, which requires high reliability. It reacted by cancelling the Patrick contract and moving to Hutchison’s Sydney International Container Terminal (SICTL) at Port Botany and DP World Australia at Melbourne.
